Listen: January 2014 Playlist – All the Best Music from January 2014 in one handy playlist

Although January tends to be a bit of a depressing month – Christmas is gone, no-one has any money, the weather is dreary etc. etc… – it does have one thing going for it: new music.

January is typically the month where everyone starts the ‘big in 2014’ scramble – so there’s always a lot of cool new music floating around to get into on those dark nights.

I’ve put together the below playlist featuring the best of what’s come out in January, which includes new stuff from BANKS (who is definitely going to be big in 2014), Bombay Bicycle Club (already pretty big I think!), Yuck, Metronomy, James Blake, Blood Red Shoes, Elephant, Blood Cultures and loads more. There’s also a couple of tasty remixes in there as well. Read more about Listen: January 2014 Playlist – All the Best Music from January 2014 in one handy playlist

Listen: Gruff Rhys – ‘American Interior’

Last month Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon and sometime solo man Gruff Rhys announced his next project is an ambitious album, film, book and interactive app bundle called American Interior.

As is the Welsh rocker’s way these days, American Interior is a concept album – this time about one of his ancestors who trekked across America in the late-1700’s to find a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans.

Today he has revealed the title track from the album which, if nothing else, is proof that Gruff is still one of the best at spinning a complex narrative into something stunningly simple and accessible. Listen to ‘American Interior’:

Album stream: Pharrell Williams – GIRL

Rushed album releases are a bit in vogue these days, and official Man Of 2013 Pharrell Williams isn’t one to buck a trend. He only announced his new album G I R L last week at the BRITs, and is now streaming it ahead of its release next week.

The album features contributions from Daft Punk, Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys. There’s also a credit for Hollywood soundtrack supremo Hans Zimmer who helped with all the string arrangements. Read more about Album stream: Pharrell Williams – GIRL

Listen: Jungle reveal new single ‘Busy Earnin’

London-based collective Jungle are an exciting prospect. We know this because they made the BBC Sound of 2014 longlist and have just signed for XL – so they must be good.

So far though, most of the talk about Jungle has been just that – talk. Or what these days people like to call ‘hype’ or ‘buzz’. Today though Jungle have made their first move of 2014with awesome new single ‘Busy Earnin’ – a distinctive mover that’s hard to put down.

Listen: Yuck release aptly titled new track ‘Another One’

London-based indie-fuzz revivalists Yuck returned with their second album Glow & Behold last year, following the departure of their frontman. Instead of resting on their laurels, they were straight back in the studio at the end of 2013 and have a new EP ready called ‘Southern Skies’.

Today they’ve revealed the second track from the EP, with the straight-to-the-point title ‘Another One’. As usual it’s a dreamy and fuzzy peach of a record that just swallows you up.

Listen to it below:

Listen: Jagwar Ma release ridiculously good MssingNo remix of ‘Uncertainty’

If I gave out some kind of award for remix of the week, then this would probably win it for the next month at least.

I don’t normally feature remixes per se, as there’s so many of them flying about it would be a full-time job in itself trying to collate them all. I usually share/repost them on Soundcloud, so make sure you follow me there 🙂

The remix that bucks the trend and deserves a bit more coverage is the below piece of brilliance from elusive grime producer MssingNo – who has given Jagwar Ma’s ‘Uncertainty’ a spectral, emotive and majestic reworking.

Album stream: Beck – ‘Morning Phase’

Beck is back this month with his first album of recorded material in six years in the shape of Morning Phase – and he has made it available to stream in full online before its release next week.

The album follows Beck’s 2008 album Modern Guilt and his 2012 sheet music release Song Reader, but has been described as a companion piece to his powerful and emotionally charged 2002 album Sea Change. Read more about Album stream: Beck – ‘Morning Phase’

Listen: Klaxons – ‘Children Of The Sun’

Klaxons raised a few eyebrows last week with the big reveal of their pop-tastic ‘comeback’ single ‘There Is No Other Time‘.

As revealed last week, Klaxons have been working with a range of different producers for their upcoming third album. ‘There Is No Other Time’ was produced by Radio 1 favourites Gorgon City, and other collaborators include James Murphy, Erol Alkan and The Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowlands, who worked on ‘Children Of The Sun’.
