This Week’s Single Releases (5th January 2014)

My round up of the new singles available for digital download this week. Above and Beyond – ‘Mariana Trench’ Inspired by the geographical landmark, ‘Mariana Trench’ captures the feel of the sea very well and has shades of underwater levels from mid-90s video games mixed with the best of Robert Miles. As a fully instrumental […]

The Travelling Band single review – ‘Battlescars’

The Travelling Band – ‘Battlescars’ This single review was submitted by Philip Lickley, who runs the music blog .Wav Goodbye. ‘Battlescars’ is the first cut from Manchester’s Travelling Band’s second album and is the musical equivalent of a lazy sunny afternoon: pleasant, calming, almost ethereal. Very simplistic in its production, and all the better for […]

My A-Z round up of the new singles available for digital download this week.

Single Of The Week

Foxes – ‘Let Go For Tonight’
The second single from their debut album and this is a much more accomplished listen than their first cut. With a bombastic backing tune and a hugely danceable vibe, with Louisa Rose Allen’s vocals belting out, this is a great slice of bouncy pop with some well-placed lyrics, musical breaks and a fun, closing section. Hopefully this will do well for the young singer in the charts. (7.5/10)

My A-Z round up of the new singles available for digital download this week.

A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera – ‘Say Something’
Here’s a slow-paced piano-led ballad that is programmed to pull at your heart-strings and certainly feels like the post-Valentines come down. ‘Say Something’ is a song that you really want to go somewhere but it doesn’t quite build on its initial concept; a huge chorus never really appears. The verse is touching and well balanced between the vocals of the main singer and guest artist Aguilera over some swelling strings and it finally brings a bit more power in the final third. It’ll fit nicely over the touching end of a television drama but not sure how strong it is on its own, but it’s a well meaning tear-jerker if you’re in the right frame of mind. (6.5/10)

Single Of The Week

Gary Barlow and Elton John – ‘Face to Face’
Gary Barlow and Elton John
{rating}
Buy it: Face To Face
For whatever reason this song has had very little publicity, so little that Amazon and iTunes aren’t listing it as a single even though it’s charted and was released. ‘Face to Face’ is Barlow’s best solo track yet. He’s crafted a bouncy, up-tempo singable number and his vocals – which are rather ‘Manic Street Preachers’ at times – work very well with the ever reliable deep sounds of Elton John. With some spot-on production, a truly memorable vibe and a powerful breakdown, this deserves to be much more successful. Poppy, perky and very catchy. Pop perfection!

This Week’s New Single Releases (26th January 2014)

My round up of the new singles available for digital download this week. The Amazing Snakeheads – ‘Flatlining’ From the same label as Franz Ferdinand comes this slow, lumbering number headed up by a sombre, gruff singer echoing over a chunky bassline. It’s so slow it’s almost pedestrian and pretty uncommercial, but with unusual vocals […]
