While there’s quite a bit of exciting new music happening at the minute, not much of it is coming from good old fashioned UK guitar acts. Save for reliable old hands like Richard Hawley and seasoned campaigners like The Maccabees, guitar music is in a bit of a lull and in desperate need of young and exciting new blood.
It’s far too early to know whether new Manchester six-piece band Folks are capable of injecting a bit of life and soul into the guitar scene, but there are some promising elements to their new single ‘Skull & Bones’ – which sounds a bit like The Coral covering Paul Weller (or maybe the other way round). Have a listen here and let me know what you think:
It’s always dangerous for new guitar rock bands – trying to use their Britpop influences as much as possible without getting wrapped up in them and sounding like Jet is quite difficult. So lets hope Folks can avoid that fate when they release their debut album I See Cathedral on 1 October.
