This Week’s New Single Releases (9th February 2014)

My A-Z round up of the new singles available for digital download this week.

Single Of The Week

Gary Barlow and Elton John – ‘Face to Face’
Gary Barlow and Elton John
{rating}
Buy it: Face To Face
For whatever reason this song has had very little publicity, so little that Amazon and iTunes aren’t listing it as a single even though it’s charted and was released. ‘Face to Face’ is Barlow’s best solo track yet. He’s crafted a bouncy, up-tempo singable number and his vocals – which are rather ‘Manic Street Preachers’ at times – work very well with the ever reliable deep sounds of Elton John. With some spot-on production, a truly memorable vibe and a powerful breakdown, this deserves to be much more successful. Poppy, perky and very catchy. Pop perfection!

This Week’s New Single Releases (26th January 2014)

My round up of the new singles available for digital download this week. The Amazing Snakeheads – ‘Flatlining’ From the same label as Franz Ferdinand comes this slow, lumbering number headed up by a sombre, gruff singer echoing over a chunky bassline. It’s so slow it’s almost pedestrian and pretty uncommercial, but with unusual vocals […]

This Week’s New Single Releases (19th January 2014)

My round up of the new singles available for digital download this week. Armin Van Burren – ‘Who’s Afraid of 138?!’ (EP) Joined with a handful of remixes, this latest from Van Burren is an upbeat way to start this week’s music reviews with its thumping dance beat and get up and rave vibe. Lacking […]

This Week’s New Single Releases (12th January 2014)

My round up of the new singles available for digital download this week. Armin Van Buuren – ‘Save My Night’ The superstar DJ returns with his sixth cut from his fifth album ‘Intense’ (though the extended edition, natch) and the mostly-instrumental number avoids some of the expectations from 21st Century dance and feels like a […]

So in this final part, here are my top twenty songs of 2013! 20. Gary Barlow – ‘Let Me Go’ (Released: November, No. 2) After a few years captaining the reformed Take That man-band, Barlow released his first major solo single in fourteen years. Taking inspiration from Mumford and Sons, this perky, country-tinged number feels […]

With the majority of my countdown already covered, let’s get a bit nearer to my top twenty with numbers #40 through to #21. 40. Clean Bandit – ‘Mozart’s House’ (Released: March, No. 17) Possibly one of the least accessible tracks of the year, Clean Bandit’s ‘Mozart’s House’ was, however, an eye opener, mixing in electronic […]

Phil’s Top 100 Music Singles of 2013: #60 – #41

With forty songs already covered, let’s get into the top sixty, with numbers 60 through to 41. 60. Bellowhead – ‘Roll The Woodpile Down’ (Released: February, didn’t chart) Around for the best part of a decade, this second single from their ‘Broadside’ album grabbed my attention with its catchy folk-indie-pop vibe that fitted neatly onto […]

Little Me

This Week’s New Single Releases (29th December 2013)

My round up of the new singles available for digital download this week. Little Mix – ‘Little Me’ I suppose it was inevitable that my favourite piece of classical music would one day be included in a pop song. The first track to interpolate Opus. 50 from Gabriel Fauré’s ‘Pavane’ since S Club 7’s ‘Natural’ […]
