I seem to be featuring a lot of new electronic music in this New Music section these days (see features on Feathers and Blank Maps), so now it’s time for something a little bit different…
Daniel James is a singer-songwriter hailing from Northern Ireland who is very much in the Tom Odell mould – think powerful melodies and strong, emotive vocals. His musical education consisted of listening to his dad’s impressive record collection – Bowie, Van Morrison and Otis Redding featured prominently – and he’s now ready to have a pop at this pop music lark himself.
His first single is the very promising ‘Jackdaw’, which deftly avoids the usual singer-songwriter pitfalls and clichés (i.e. no arty-farty over-emoting) by focusing on the strong and memorable melody. The split-screen video is quite interesting too. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below:
