After a successful event last year, the Music Festival Proms are back! The proms will feature several themed acts that promise bravado, style, and a music experience that guests can only experience at the proms.
The event will be held in the Edwardian Town Hall from June 30 – July 11. Here are some of the acts that music lovers can expect at the Cheltenham Festival Proms this year.
The Opening Night
The opening act of the 2015 Cheltenham Music Festival will be filled with a crossover of American and European music. George Gershwin’s renditions of Jazz music that he composed before moving to Paris will be included in the act. Ben Gernon, winner of the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors contest, and Martin James Barlett, BBC’s Young Musician recipient last year, will also be included in the opening day.
Psycho with a live band
Psycho Live is a unique event at the prom, featuring Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho film with a live band playing in the background. UK’s famed Britten Sinfonia will playing the scores.
When Psycho was made, Alfred Hitchcock said that he couldn’t hire a full symphony orchestra for the movie because his budget was so low. However, Psycho is one of the best psychological-horror thrillers ever made in the 60s and this year, the Cheltenham Festival Proms is there to give the film the musical justice it deserves.
Gustav Mahler’s 3rd Symphony
Two years ago, Shostakovich’s 5th symphony performed by the Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra left everyone at the Cheltenham Festival Proms in bliss. Now, the orchestra is back, with a few other masters joining the act including Chetham’s School of Music Director Stephen Threlfall and Baroque and Classical Prodigy Sarah Connoly. The group will perform Mahler’s 3rd Symphony, which is said to be the legendary composer’s longest symphony in his repertoire, with a typical performance lasting around two hours.
The Cheltenham Festival Proms 2015 is not to be confused with the Cheltenham Festival 2015. The latter event is a racing affair, which will take place from March 10 – 13. The Cheltenham Festival Proms will feature some of the best musicians all over the world, while the Cheltenham Festival 2015 will bring out some of the best British and Irish-trained horses for race betting.
