Radiohead surprised everyone today by unexpectedly announcing the release details of their new album, The King Of Limbs. Rumours have been circulating for a few months that the Oxford band had an albums worth of material ready – but the sudden announcement still took us by surprise.
In the announcement on their website, Radiohead revealed the album is available to preorder immediately at http://www.thekingoflimbs.com, with the mp3 version available for £6. The album will be released this Saturday (19 February).
This marks a bit of a shift for Radiohead, who famously released previous album In Rainbows on a ‘pay what you like’ basis – so either they didn’t make as much money from that as they hoped, or they are keen to avoid the furore it caused this time around!
As well as the £6 download out this Saturday, The King Of Limbs will also be released in a more physical form on 9 May. This “Newspaper Album” (whatever that means!) will cost £30 and consists of:
- Two clear 10″ vinyl records in a purpose-built record sleeve.
- A compact disc.
- Many large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork and a full-colour piece of oxo-degradeable plastic to hold it all together.
- A digital download that is compatible with all good digital media players.
Also, one lucky Radiohead fan who buys the “Newspaper Album” will win a signed 2 track 12 inch vinyl.
