Bobby Gillespie lays into ‘vague’ young bands…

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie has criticised today’s crop of young bands – accusing them of “not having anything to say”. Gillespie was quoted by Sky News as saying of his new album:

“Some of it is a critique of pop culture, which is something I think is lacking in a lot of modern music. It seems that nobody’s got anything to say anymore. I got into Deerhunter and Panda Bear, and I like their music, but it’s kinda vague. And I guess that’s the attraction.”

The singer suggested the current lack of inspiration in the music world is down to bands playing it safe – rather than looking to rattle cages and create a new scene like punk:

“Maybe people feel safe being vague. We grew up with punk, and it was anything but vague, y’know, ‘God Save the Queen’. I’m not saying things were better when I was a teenager, but it was a different aesthetic.”
