Best New Songs for Autumn 2014

So the summer festival season has left and now the nights are starting to draw in with the autumn. However, that’s no excuse to watch the leaves fall or listen to the sound of the wind and rain outside. Instead, turn up the volume and settle in for the latest and freshest tracks of The Amity Affliction, Manchester Orchestra, Maybeshewill, Lana Del Ray, Grimes, Emarosa and Fences.

1. Fences – Arrows (featuring Macklemore & Ryan Lewis)

Hailing from Seattle and expected to drop his second album early next year, listeners can treat themselves to this serene and sublime indie/pop/rap track in the meantime.

2. Emarosa – American Déjà Vu

Fans had to wait four years between their self-titled second album and the release of their latest record ‘Versus’, but the wait is well worth it for this post-hardcore gem, as Emarosa excel with rousing choruses and memorable riffs.

3. Grimes – Go (Featuring Blood Diamonds)

Grimes has unmistakably levelled up her game. Big Time. Both haunting and dreamlike, her vocals will capture and enthral you the moment they hit your eardrum. Far more pop-like and hooked based, ‘Go’ has less meandering and surreal elements than her previous hits ‘Genesis’ and ‘Oblivion’.

4. Lana Del Ray – Ultraviolence

Everyone’s favourite anti-pop star follows up her ground-breaking debut album, with the title single from her sophomore album ‘Ultraviolence’. Unquestionably Lana Del Ray, ‘Ultraviolence’ is the melancholic and soul crushingly beautiful track we’ve come to expect. Perhaps even take a look here to have this stunning woman grace your bedroom wall.

5. Maybeshewill – Fair Youth

This is how instrumental music should be played. Leicester’s Maybeshewill have mesmerised and enthralled for many a year, with ‘Fair Youth’ the title track from their latest album. Instruments take centre stage and join together to create a sound that is beyond description. Just think of it like a sunset over crystal waters and golden sand. Don’t speak, just listen and absorb.

6. Manchester Orchestra – Trees

A reimagining of songs from their 2013 album ‘Cope’, Manchester Orchestra have stripped down and bared the bones of their tracks to create a new album ‘Hope’. ‘Trees’ stands out as a song that is completely reworked from its first incarnation. Slower, calmer and impossible to turn away from.

7. The Amity Affliction – Pittsburg

Aussie metalcore stalwarts The Amity Affliction kick their way into the room with guns blazing with the first song off their 4th album ‘Let the Ocean Take Me’. ‘Pittsburgh’ is raucous and uplifting, like someone hitting you while reciting poetry.
