Beats Music and YouTube to enter music streaming market in early 2014

The world of music streaming is about to get a lot more crowded soon with two potentially huge new services going up against the likes of Spotify and Pandora in early 2014.

Beats Electronics have announced today that their Beats Music streaming service – formerly known as ‘Daisy‘ – will be launched in January 2014. Ian Rogers, the CEO of Beats Music, said today in a blog post that the service is now out of the Alpha and Beta tasting stages and is ‘ready to launch in the US in January 2014’.

No word on when it will be available in the UK – but from today you can pre-register your username of choice at BeatsMusic.com.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Beats Music service, it promises to be a lot different from algorithm-based streaming sites like Spotify by being heavily curated – with Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor being heavily involved. Whether this proves to be a recipe for success or not remains to be seen, but with the full backing of Dr Dre’s headphone giant and the financial involvement of Warner Music it must have a chance.

Another upcoming streaming service that has a fair bit of clout behind it is YouTube’s long-rumoured offering. Tech blog AllThingsD are reporting today that, while the service won’t be launched this year, it is likely that we will see it in Q1 of 2014.

So by next spring Spotify is going to have some big competition!

At least 5-6 times in the last 6 months I’ve seen it written that spotify is about to have some big competition because of a new service. And each time it made no difference. This will be the same. I don’t understand how it is that they don’t realize this crucial point. I listen to spotify (and torch music), I see nothing in any of the BEATS write ups that would imply I’ll get anything more from that service. I expect them to crash and burn.
